Make up your mind, please.

The hardest part about having Asian parents? You can never win. Ever. It’s either you’re doing too much or too little; or trying too hard or not hard enough. Case in point:

I: Why are you eating too much? You’re getting too fat - stop eating.
II: Why aren’t you eating your food? Don’t you know you’re wasting money?

I: You need to stop relying on student loans to get you through school. Be more responsible!
II: You need to cut back on your hours at work. You should be focusing more on school.

I: Stop dressing so casually. You look like a katulong 1.
II: Ay! Why are you dressed like that? You look like a hooker.

I: Why did you only get 80%? Didn’t you study enough?
II: Why did you get 95%? What happened to the other 5%?

I love my parents - I really do. But sometimes, I can’t help but be glad that I live four hours away from them. My bank account may not agree with me on that decision sometimes, but dear god, at least my sanity can remain a bit more intact.

Meh, it’s the same with my parents. I got a 90 average in math, which was also the class average, and they were all “YOU MEAN YOU’RE ONLY AVERAGE?” They may have been joking, but it made me feel bad. :( Parents always send mixed messages.

My parents and parents-in-law (both Asians) behaved in the same way as what you have said, esp when it comes to food. They will nag when I am eating too little and when I try to finish everything up, they will comment about me getting fat >.<

You gotta love Filipino parents. They’re so fickle-minded, it can be annoying at times.

Filipino mothers are the funniest, though. My mom’s so cute and her accent is just utterly hilarious.

Oy you’re Filipino? Hahaha, I agree they can be pretty contradicting at times. Especially on the first part about eating. My mom tells me I’m getting fat then she buys a lot of food and nags me as to why I am not eating. Yeah, I don’t know anymore :P

But then again, that’s part of their charm haha.

My parents are West Indian, and even though it’s not as extreme as your case, they can’t make up their mind. In their eyes, we never win.

I wonder–are we gonna be like them with our kids? *shudders*
