If only I was bitextual

I’m not going to lie. Sometimes, I really fucking hate living in Ottawa.

Don’t get me wrong - I love the cultural aspects and perks that come with living in the capital city. Ottawa can be extremely vibrant, colourful, and fun. And for a Human Rights and Political Science major, it’s pretty much a haven for intelligent conversations about anything and everything that falls under the political spectrum (which is unfortunately rare in the typically politically apathetic country of Canada).

But when you’re an anglophone looking for a job in a city that reveres French-speakers, well, Ottawa can really, really, really suck.

With my CV now, I should be able to get a position as an administrative assistant, or certainly, at least a teller job at any of the major banks in any other Canadian cities. But because I live in Ottawa, and I unfortunately don’t speak French (and that every office or banking related jobs I’ve searched for has the “Must be Bilingual” caveat), I’m pretty much relegated to retail and sales.

…which, you know, normally wouldn’t be a problem. Except, I’ve never had a single day of retail or sales experience in my life. Ever. I mean, the closest thing to “Customer Service” that I’ve done is making sure that my manager had a double tall vanilla latte ready at her desk every morning.

Basically, either way, I’m screwed. Which is totally not a good thing, because my uni fees? Kind of needs to get paid. And, you know, I also kind of need to get fed.

Carleton University, you should really tell your prospective students that even though Ottawa’s primary language is English (70% of the population, apparently), they’re unlikely to get a half decent job unless they speak French.

PS. I’ve finished moving in to the new host, so everything should be in working order. Also, new layout, as you can see. Suggestions and critiques are very much welcomed and appreciated :).

My cousin’s at Carleton for Media Studies (I think that’s what it’s called?), perhaps I should tell him this. :P Thank goodness I chose to go into French Immersion.

That’s so ridiculous…it may be time to consider other revenue streams?

Private tutors here in Melbourne (e.g. undergrad uni kids tutoring high school kids in home) get about $20 cash an hour. Is that at all a possibility for you?

… Wow. I totally read that as “bisexual.” :P

What about internships and on-campus jobs? You could probably find a retail job with no prior experience, too… I mean, if I could, anyone can. Good luck!

I loved downtown Ottawa! Orleans? … Not so much. But, I *am* bilingual, so I suppose that’s why. :\
