Losing My Religion

I’m not sure what the current blogging etiquette is about what constitutes as too personal and TL;DR, but something in me feels absolutely compelled to write this.

Feel free to skip along if you’re uninterested about nonsensical ramblings about religion and my incessant questions about the validity of the Church.

Anyway.

Possibly the only post I’ll ever make on American politics.

I was goofing around YouTube, when I came across CSPAN’s Presidential Debate coverage. Obviously, it was YouTube, and the comments were all painful as hell to read (or decipher, really, from all the incessant ignorant hate speech that flourished within the 3500 or so comments).

I found this one especially interesting, though:

Obama is a socialist who would run the economy into the ground (just like socialism did in Europe).

Right. Of course free health care and all those other ludicrous public social services ran Europe to the ground. Damn those Socialists. I mean, I guess that’s why the Euro is worth almost 50% more than the US Dollar, right? And that’s totally why their standard of living is significantly better than that of the United States. Because they’re being run to the ground.

Ajsdfhsklfhdsklfjhdsf.

And on a slightly related note, why the hell are we (Canada) having another election again? Does Harper really think that the Conservatives will win a majority? I get that people aren’t exactly a fan of Dion (Liberal Party Leader) - heck, I’m not a fan of Dion - but really, the only change that will probably happen is that the NDP will become the Official Opposition Party instead of the Liberals, and that the Greens will (finally) get some more seats.

Can we please spend those millions of dollars being flushed at this election elsewhere? Like education, health care, woman’s rights - you know, all of the areas that Harper significantly reduced or cut out from the budget since he came into power?

Let’s get something straight, Canada.

So. My boyfriend Adam van Koeverden? He placed eighth last night in the K1 1000m kayaking race, after being one of the favourites to win it. I’m not going to lie - I’m sad that he didn’t win. But am I disappointed in him? No, never. I can’t even fathom just how devastating this must be to him - he doesn’t need me (or anyone else, for that matter) to try and further the blow.

I am disappointed in some of the horrible comment reactions found here and here, though. He’s been called a disgrace, an embarrassment, and as “nothing but a fraudulent pretty boy”.

There’s so much emphasis placed on getting medals and reaching the top of the podium, that I think so many people are failing to see the fact that it’s an honour to even have these athletes who are willing to step up and represent us - medal or not.

Can you imagine the hard work and the sacrifices these athletes have to make to even just get to the Olympics?

Let’s get something out in the open right now: we are not entitled to anything.

We. Are. Not. Entitled. To. Anything.

Because unless we’re the ones training hard eight to twelve hours every day; spending tens of thousands of dollars on gear, equipment, coaches, and meets; putting our lives on hold for at least four years; and getting little to no support from the country we’re representing, who are we to say that anyone at the Olympic level (or heck, even at a provincial or national level) is a disgrace?

Medals are great, don’t get me wrong. I’m proud of each and every one of the Canadians who’ve won medals so far (even the Equestrian team!). But I’m also proud of all the other athletes who didn’t win any. Why? Because they went for it. They went for their dreams, regardless of the adversity. They worked hard, they sacrificed a lot, and did a fucking whole lot more than just sit on their asses and criticise everyone else.

Anyway.

Good luck on the K1 500m race tomorrow, Adam.

ETA: My friends and I stayed up until 3AM this morning to watch the K1 500, and CONGRATULATIONS, ADAM, FOR WINNING THE SILVER. I knew you could do it :).
