The ever so ubiquitous top five list.

I’m supposed to be studying for my Accounting midterm tomorrow, but clearly, my brain doesn’t want to cooperate. Instead, I’ve been hanging around the WayBack Machine, reading my blog entries from fifty billion years ago (read: 2004).

I found an entry listing a whole bunch of random Top Five things (partly and originally ganked from Ari), and though I said on my old post that it was the first and last Top Five list I’ll ever do, I’m going to have to renege on that and do it again. Mainly because I’m bored. And partly because I’d like to think that some things about me have changed over the last four years.

Anyway. Here it is: The Top Five Things of a Lot of Things Involving the Life of One Named Allee.

Fatcakes, FTW.

Two years ago, in 2006, I had the privilege of joining a volunteer group to do some community service work in Botswana, Africa. For a month and a half, I got to live, work, learn, eat, breathe, and sing with some of the most amazing people I’ve ever met.

I definitely learned a lot about love and humanity during my stay in Africa, for sure. And, hey, maybe one day, I’ll even post about my experiences in greater detail.

However, today, I’d like to talk about one (of the many, I assure you) of the things about Botswanan culture that captured me the most. So much so, that two years later, I can still smell and taste the sheer utter goodness of it all. Yes. I’m talking about Fatcakes.

What are Fatcakes, you ask? Fatcakes are these small little squishes of dough that’s heavily deep-fried in enough oil that’s probably enough to shave off a few days from your life. In other words: amazing. Why are they called Fatcakes, then? Umm, well, because they’re cakes. And they make you fat.

Anyway.

I woke up this morning with a sudden craving for them, and all day, I’ve been hallucinating over the sight, taste, and smell of Fatcakes. Seriously. I found a recipe online, but it didn’t quite work out the way I wanted it to. Maybe it’s just my incredible culinary skills (ahem, or the lack, thereof), but I don’t remember Fatcakes ever looking like pita bread before.

Fail. Major, major fail.

Oh, well. Maybe I should take this as a sign for me to go back. After all, Fatcakes really are worth it. As are the people, of course ;).

Server move, yo.

I feel like someone, somewhere, is completely conspiring against my move to Holdfire. I was originally hosted by ResellerZoom, but I didn’t really want to pay $7 every month for something I barely use. So, customized reseller from Holdfire for a bit more than half the price? Pretty much made of win.

…except my FTP upload speeds were, at max, 10 kb/s. Which is ultra weird, considering I’m running on Broadband. Then today, the servers that the resellers were on went poop for a few hours. I must be bringing all the bad luck out to the table, I tell you.

Oh, well.

Things seem to have been fixed, and it looks like all is well(ish). After annoying Jordan from Holdfire with lots of HelpDesk tickets, we finally decided on a solution (major gifts of awesomeness to you, homeslice). So, for the next several hours, I’ll be in the process of moving from one server to another. If things suddenly erupt or mysteriously combust, er, it’ll come back. Eventually.

PS. Orange juice? Awesomesauce.

PPS. It worked. Or, at least, I think it worked. If you see any blood splatters, or any other remnants of the goriness that is le server move, please let me know, yeah? Merci.
